Two Artists. Independent Practices. A Shared Voice.

KeeneOnArt is the editorial and social identity of artists Tobias Keene and Annelize Bester, and the public voice of KEENE ART.

KEENE is the larger creative and archival structure established around their two individual practices — a framework for presenting work, preserving histories, publishing ideas and developing conversations across painting, photography, film and the archive.

Within that structure, each artist retains a distinct practice and authorship.

Two Practices

Painting runs across three Keene generations. Tobias works within that inheritance as a figurative painter — observation first, the figure always. He doesn’t reject the tradition he was handed, or repeat it outright. The Black Paintings push at what a face can hold: memory, identity, the weight of being looked at.

For Annelize Bester, photography and film have always been ways of reaching across distance — of keeping a conversation going when people are separated by geography or circumstance. That impulse runs from her earliest work, documenting communities separated by distance, through to projects like The Children of Botswana, where a photograph is never treated as a final object: it moves between people, holds something of a life that would otherwise go unrecorded, and starts relationships that outlast the moment it was made.

A Shared Voice

KeeneOnArt is where those two practices enter a broader conversation. It does not replace the individual voice of either artist. It is the outward-facing identity — in print and online — through which KEENE ART engages with artworks, archives, provenance, museums, collectors, cultural history and the changing ways in which art is documented and presented. On social media, it is the one shared handle and feed carrying both practices to a public audience, without either one standing in for the whole.
